The Hermetik Descaling System in
Iron and Steel Plants
The Hermetik descaler has been used in Europe and USA for years
at cold and hot descaling of plates, slabs, ingots, billets, bars and
symmetrical forged rings and rods.
Facts:
Scale builds up in the casting process when casting powder is added to the product
containing at least 40 % silicon (Si). Steel grades such as spring steel, electro steel,
alloyed steel and even ferrite and austenitic stainless steel grades, themselves
contain high degrees of C, Si and Mn. Si is in a liquid condition and works as a
glue, keeping the scale. The thin layer of silicon and scale covering the steel surface
is situated at the exit of the caster. In order to create high quality steel, it is
necessary to remove the scale structure in a proper manner. When removing
the scale successfully, some technical parameters must be considered.
• The need for ultra high impact
• The need for high pressure
• The need for a narrow distance of 20-30 mm between the nozzle
and surface
Scale will not be removed unless these conditions are fulfilled
The Art of Descaling
Taking the above parameters into account, Hermetik has developed a
system with the ability to perform complete descaling. The Hermetik descaler
operates in a high-pressure range and thus produces a water jet with high
energy density. A sharply concentrated water jet impinges on the surface.
The intensity of removal increases exponentially with water pressure. Due to
the high impact loading of the attacked surface, scale is deformed in various
ways, loosened and finally carried off in particles.
Contrary to conventional methods, the Hermetik Tornado Rotor descales
completely creating a perfectly clean surface adding to the quality of the
steel production.
